Best New Fantasy Book Series

Fantasy writing is probably THE example of imagination at its highest. The author is creating a whole new world – one filled with dragons, creatures, rules of magic – very different from the reality we know. Unlike science fiction which pushes the boundaries of physics and biology, fantasy pushes something more inward, belief and wishes. For the most part people don’t believe in elves, fairies or dragons in the day-to-day, but in the fantasy author’s world, those elements thrive…and the more fantastical, the better.

The battle between good and evil, right and wrong is the main theme of fantasy and of course magical solutions which replace the laws of nature as we understand them. Events occur, things appear, change just because they do. It’s all at the mercy of the author’s galloping imagination. For children in particular this works beautifully. They have very little hard fact for why things work as they do, making believing a fantasy story just another happening in their lives.

Five Arenas of Fantasy Fiction

Dividing fantasy up into categories is challenging and just asking for a battle to ensue…but I think these general arenas are a good start. Authors of fantasy fiction are quite free, and often do, choose elements of more than one category, after all, that’s what fantasy is..the author’s world.

High Fantasy:

These stories are generally about kings and queens, knights, castles, villagers, etc. Peaceful kingdoms are threatened by some great evil and conquering heroes ride forth. It’s not uncommon to see parodies on this theme, poking fun at it’s usual loftiness. (Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories comes to mind). For the most part, these stories come from mythology and European legend, particularly Britain.

Adventure Fantasy

In these stories our heroes are not really facing the “big” battle but rising to the challenge of smaller, more personal forays into fantasy worlds..and quite often having a darned good time doing it. We’ll commonly see a small group of friends and possibly their animal sidekicks working together for the common good. The Wizard of Oz is a fine example of this type of fantasy book.

Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales could never be left out in the world of fantasy writing and are probably some of the oldest examples. Fairy tales in general deal with a personal transformation of some kind. The ugly duckling becomes the swan, the poor maid becomes a princess and the frog becomes the prince. They are ‘smaller’ stories, but by no means any lesser of a fantasy with any less number of fans. Older works of Hans Christian Andersen to the more modern tales from Jane Yolen and Patricia McKillip fall into this group.

Magical Realism

This type of fantasy fiction mostly takes place in the modern world, with magic oozing into one particular character’s life. And often without anyone else seeing the magic…just it’s effects. Like Water For Chocolate – A famous example of Magical Realism

Dark Fantasy

Dark Fantasy owns horror, gothic and erotic fantasy fiction from Bram Stoker (Dracula) and Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) to today’s Ann Rice Stephen King, Laurell K Hamilton and Dean Koontz. These stories are brewed in fear, terror and death. Definitely not for the faint of heart, these tales have millions of fans.

Some may ask..”What value is fantasy in our lives?” I believe Tolkien answered that best. To him, fantasy or stories set in ‘faerie’ as he put it had three very important aspects. Recovery, Escape and Consolation. Recovery is about re-examining the world with the wonder we had as children. Escaping is leaving this sometimes very difficult, day to day routine to a vastly more exciting and rule-breaking magical one. Consolation is about the fact that most fantasy and fairytales end in happy endings, leaving us with a ‘feel good’ sense of comfort. Fantasy then, allows us to leave this world, experience one of eternal possibilities and then return, renewed.

5 Ideas For A Best Selling Book Cover!

When it comes to marketing a book, the book cover is a book’s primary direct selling tool. It speaks out to a potential buyer and reflects the quality of the content within. The fact is that we all buy books to read it afterward, and thus hardly have any ideas on the value of the content contained within. If a book cover design is creative, relevant, attractive and interesting, readers would at least browse through the content. What can you do for a book cover to make it interesting?

1. Use keywords that appeal

Your title has to hit the nail on its head. It should jump off the book cover and appeal to your buyers. It should solve a problem that the buyer is facing. To do this, you’ve got to conduct a research on what people like and want. What are the words that draw attention well? For example, if you are writing a book on Internet Marketing, words like “make money online”, “riches” or “wealth”, will appeal to the entrepreneurial target market. Set up a focus group, or ask a few friends on their opinion of the title options you have. You may be surprised at what great ideas others may have for you.

2. Relevant design elements

The design of your book cover needs to call out to the reader. It needs magnetism and relevance to your target market. Visually appealing book covers, with color combinations that match well and even photography, are often effective. The more outstanding your book is, the better its chances of being browsed.

3. Get creative help

Get the services of a graphic designer to work on your book cover. Review past work to get a feel of his or her style, against your personal preferences. While creative designers do an excellent job of making your cover outstanding, they may run the risk of getting off-track in the message of your book. Run samples provided through friends and associates before making a decision on the right cover to use.

4. The spine – of great importance but often neglected

Is your book too thin? Can the words be read when the book is displayed on its side on the bookshelf? The thickness of your book goes hand in hand with the internal book layout design. It is ideal that your book should not be too thin, as this would also lower the perceived value of your book. However, you shouldn’t enlarge the font of your content in an effort to thicken your book either. As for the spine, it speaks to the book browser when the front can’t be seen. Therefore it has to creative and communicative as well. Make sure that the font used on the spine is readable, and that the browser does not have to try to hard to read the text.

5. The back of the book

Much of book marketing involves making the best of your resources. There are many authors who fail to utilize the back of the book to their advantage. Have you ever picked up a book that does not say a thing about the content on its cover? Do you realize that many people turn the book around to its back to get a synopsis of it’s content? If you can’t do it yourself, hire a copywriter to work on your back cover. As a rule of thumb, try to include the core messages within your book, who needs to read the book, and also your personal credentials.

Finally, if you want to market a book properly, you probably need to put yourself in the shoes of the reader. Only then would you be able to identify the best ways to get through to them, through your book.

Scarecrow by Matthew Reily Book Review – Best Action Thriller

Grab a seat and get ready for the best action thriller you have probably ever read. Matthew Reilly has set a new pace for an action novel that leaves the reader breathless and makes other characters like Dirk Pitt, James Bond and Rambo look like amateurs. Below is my book review of Scarecrow by Matthew Reilly, but you may just want to get a copy now, because no review will ever compare to the thrill you’ll get reading this book!

Scarecrow is the code/nickname of Shane Schofield, an elite marine who has extremely quick relexes and a plethora of cool toys like the Maghook and the awesome shuriken!

Schofield is one of 15 targets on a hit list, each having a bounty of $18.6 million on their heads. A secret organization, known only as the Majestic-12, has a plan to create a new cold war and need to eliminate these 15 targets. These are some the finest warriors in the world, but in order for Majestic-12 to complete their plan, these targets must all be dead by 12 noon today.

These bounties bring out the elite bounty hunters in the world and they literally are dropping out the sky to nab their targets. From creating elaborate traps to kidnapping, they will do anything to get these targets. Schofield is now being chased around the world, from Russia to Afghanistan to France, by some of the fiercest bounty hunters on the planet – all trying to collect another head!

Schofield is befriended by one of the world’s best bounty hunter, The Black Knight, who is helping him to stay alive. The Black Knight is equal to the Scarecrow in his abilities, reflexes and fighting skills, which make them a formidable team. With the help of Gant, Mother, Book II, Rufus and some old friends, Schofield tries to unravel the reason behind the massive bounty hunt, who is behind it and more importantly how to stop it and survive past 12noon!

This book is relentless in the action and takes no prisoners. Many of the characters are killed off and you are never sure who will be next. Reilly pulls no punches – everyone is expendable in this novel. This is not one of those books that has a happily ever after ending… there are some surprises that will tear at the heartstrings of longtime fans.

The book is a little over 450 pages and I wanted to read it all in one sitting, because once I got started, it was just too hard to put down. Unfortunately that was not the case. The action is so intense it actually wears you out. I had to read it in 3 sittings, just to give myself time to absorb everything that was happening. I have now reread the book and found it just as much fun as the first time through.

One of the interesting parts of the book, was the interview with Matthew Reilly at the end of the book. Matthew tells why he wrote the book, some of the reasons for creating certain characters and more importantly why one of the spoilers was included. There is a major spoiler that many fans will probably not like, but it makes for a great scene in the book. I found this interview real insightful, especially since I hate most author interviews… they all seem so self-serving and contrite.

The New Rules of Marketing – Book Review

I just finished reading “The New Rules of Marketing and PR” by David Meerman Scott. As a pioneer and owner of a new media network, I am always interested to read new books on the subject matter. Having been familiar with the author’s work on the “offline media” I had high expectations for his latest offering. I was not let down, this book covers it all and it will serve as one of the best books on this subject.

The book covers a wide range of topics, including, blogging, podcasts, viral marketing and other forms of online media. I really liked how to book was structured, it starts off with a broad view of the industry and how thing were and what they are like now. The meat of the book is comprised of action plans, with step by step instructions on how to get started with your online campaigns. Along the way there are also some fabulous case studies provided, so we can not only see what others did but we could also see what the results were. I found this to be the nest part of the book and I found a lot of inspiration in those stories. This book does a great job of tying in all the elements like blogging and podcasts and shows us how they are all connected and how we can blend them all together to really be successful online. This was helpful to me because as a professional blogger, this is really the only part I Know. I am very inexperienced with podcasting, but after reading this book, I am going to give it a shot.
